Samsung Galaxy S III coming in Feb 2012; Galaxy S 3D in the works

Rumours of Samsung's next flagship smartphone, Samsung Galaxy S III are back in the news. According to the latest reports, the Samsung Galaxy S III will be launched in February 2012, at MWC 2012. The new Galaxy SIII is expected to come with a quad-core processor. The last round of rumours had suggested that the S III would feature a new Exynos processor, the Exynos 4412. Also, the new Exynos processor is rumoured to be an ARM Cortex A9-based quad-core unit.

According to unwiredview.com, the Galaxy S III is likely to feature a large HD (1280 x 720) Super AMOLED Plus display, LTE connectivity, and the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform. Other things to expect from the S III are a 12MP camera and 2GB of RAM.

Galaxy S II is Samsung's most popular smartphone

Separately, reports suggest Samsung is also working on a 3D smartphone. Dubbed as the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S, the Galaxy S 3D is expected to be launched in the second half of 2012. The Samsung Galaxy S 3D is likely to feature an autostereoscopic Super Amoled HD Plus display with 1280x720 pixel resolution. The screen size of the 3D device is expected be between 4.2-inch to 4.65-inch.

Amazon Kindle Touch Review

The Kindle has shed the buttons, and seems to be handling this facet of its personality very comfortably. While it is still not officially available in India, you can order it from Amazon or any of the shopping websites that allow global shopping. Amazon accounts work seamlessly across devices - be it the Kindle app for the PC, iPad, Android or the Kindle Reader itself. Buying books will not be a problem either.

Look & Feel
The Kindle Touch is slightly heavier than the Kindle (the plain-Jane edition), but is considerably less bulky than the one with the keyboard. Since the Kindle Keyboard wasn’t considered heavy or uncomfortable to hold and read on for long durations, this one certainly isn't either! It is slightly thicker than the Kindle and the Kindle Touch, because of the touchscreen.

The bottom of the Kindle Touch has the standby/power button, and the micro USB slot for charging and data transfer. Press the power button for 7 seconds and that’ll put the Kindle in sleep more. Press it once and it goes into stand-by mode. For the version with the advertisements, it’ll show an advert, and pending any gesture, will turn off after 10 minutes.

Features
The Kindle Touch has a 6-inch display with multi-touch capabilities. The device has 4GB on-board storage - Amazon says that is good for about 3000 books. You can also email yourself ebooks (PDFs, MOBI and txt files) using the email address that gets created for you when you register the Kindle for the first time.

On-board is an experimental web browser, and “experimental” for a good reason. Some flash heavy websites do not render properly, but most sites have no such issues.

The Kindle Touch has a 3.5mm jack and built-in speakers to feed the audio books, text to speech and the built-in MP3 player functions. The speaker isn't great, quite expected. Amazon doesn’t ship any earphones with the Touch, but the audiobooks and MP3s do sound a lot better if you have a decent pair of headphones in play.

Performance
It looks extremely unassuming. On the front is the 6-inch e-ink display with multi-touch, and is accompanied by one hardware button. With all the Kindle devices till now, you had to press a hardware button to flip pages - something that turned off a lot of book lovers who missed the feel of actually turning a page. The Kindle Touch brings that back, to a huge extent. Amazon have divided the fields on the display very well - tapping anywhere in the wide margin on the right side to flip to the next page, or tap anywhere in the thin left margin will flip to the previous page. Alternatively, you can just swipe on the screen like you would swipe a page in a book. Tap on the very top of the display to open the menu bar.

You can access Kindle Store from within the reader, but you need to access the Amazon Account from via a PC and register the Kindle there. This is a one-time process, and any purchases you make will be automatically sent to your Kindle, and any other linked devices.

The screen refresh capability also has two settings here - every page or every sixth page. If you set it to every page, the text is perceptibly crisper and better to read, but there is a flash of black every time you flip a page. If you choose the latter setting, the text quality does degrade slightly, but page turn is quicker and smoother. The Kindle Touch is set to refresh the display with every page, by default.

While reading a book, you can press and hold on any work or phrase, and after a couple of seconds, a pop up menu will open. This is where you can get the meanings, as well as social network integration - post to Facebook and/or Twitter.

Tapping on the top of the display opens up the menu bar - store access, search, change font size etc. to change font sizes though, you can just use the pinch-zoom gesture and the text size can be increased or decreased with every gesture. When you are doing that, a small pop up indicates what size it is now on, from a list of pre-set font sizes.

Amazon claims a battery life of about 2 months, with an hour of reading daily. We still haven’t been able to drain the battery on our Kindle Touch! It has been with us for two weeks, and despite a couple of hours of reading daily, the battery is slightly less above 50%. It had come out of the box with about 60%, and we haven’t charged it even once. Nothing suggests we should not believe what Amazon claims about the battery life.

Our Take
The Kindle Touch brings back the fun of flipping pages to an e-book reader. It isn't officially available in India, but Amazon ships it here, and so do websites like ebay Global EasyBuy and Shop Your World. For someone who already has a Kindle, the Touch isn't an enticing enough upgrade. But for someone who is looking to buy their first e-book reader, or want to gift someone one, then the Touch is the smartest choice at the moment.

RIM launches 3 new Blackberry smartphones in India

Research In Motion (RIM) has announced the launch of three new BlackBerry smartphones in India. All three phones are based on the new BlackBerry 7 OS operating system.

The BlackBerry Bold 9790 combines a QWERTY keyboard with a touchscreen. The BlackBerry Curve 9350 is the first CDMA-based BlackBerry 7 smartphone to be launched in India. The BlackBerry Curve 9380 is the first smartphone with an all-touch display in the curved series.

"We are pleased with the response that the new BlackBerry 7 operating system is receiving from customers in India and we are very excited to introduce these three new BlackBerry 7 based models here,” said Krishnadeep Baruah, Director of Marketing for India at Research In Motion. “These new BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Curve smartphones offer compact designs with faster performance, enhanced browsing and richer multimedia, as well as NFC support.”

Vodafone 555 Blue - Facebook will never be too far away

The Vodafone Blue is aimed at a very specific audience – the ‘social networking addicted' kids! This surely isn't a smartphone, but does three things very well – calls, messages and Facebook. Basic looks and build quality, and the hardware specs aren’t something exciting. Pretty much a run of the mill feature set for a price of Rs. 4,950, but this one might just be what you buy to access Facebook on the cheap.

No Wi-Fi or 3G

Facebook integration seems to be the name of the game, at least as far as integrating social networks with smartphones is concerned. We reviewed the HTC ChaCha sometime back (http://goo.gl/4Cj8r), and that was the first indication of how deeply Facebook can be integrated with the smartphone. However, we had pointed out that the Facebook button on the ChaCha doesn’t do too much more than quick posting. Note that at no point of time are we comparing the two phones, because they fall in very different price brackets. However, we are just looking at the FB integration part of it.

Look & Feel
From afar, the Vodafone Blue does have an uncanny resemblance to the HTC ChaCha. However, that theory is pretty much dispelled the moment you hold the phone. The Blue doesn’t have that banana curve design, and the keypad layout is also a lot different from the HTC phone. The 2.4-inch display takes up half of the front panel, with four hardware keys and the optical track pad below it – call connect, call disconnect, options and menu/return. The addition of a track pad is a nice touch. The QWERTY keypad is distinctly divided into four rows, while all keys in one row don’t have a lot of spacing between them. The key size is fine though, and that’s a huge relief. Interestingly, there is a dedicated camera key as well, laid out amidst the traditional keys in a QWERTY keypad.

HTC introduces five new phones including Facebook duo, and its first tablet

The left side of the phone has the volume rocker, distinctly identifiable as a thin strip of blue colour. The right side hosts the micro USB slot, while the 3.5mm jack is on the top panel. The back of the Vodafone Blue has the 2MP camera with the LED flash, and what seems to be a pretty big speaker. Right in the middle is the Vodafone logo, not in the traditional red, but silver.

The battery cover is plastic, and we were a bit disappointed by the quality of materials used and the mechanism to open the battery cover. Firstly, we do not like the ‘use nails to prise open’ mechanism. Secondly, it opens up sideways, rather than near the bottom. This does two things – makes opening the cover harder than what it could have been, and runs the huge risk of the plastic snapping. More so, there is a danger of the ‘teeth’ on the cover breaking away.

Apart from the battery cover issue, we quite like the build offered by the Vodafone Blue. It isn't feather light, but a weight of less than 100 grams isn't something we can find any fault with.

Features
One word – Facebook! The darned Facebook button holds more aces up its sleeve! Having given us a trailer with the HTC ChaCha, and probably heard our criticism, it is back with a vengeance. This time offering the functionality and access we had expected in the first place. And not remain just a quick post thing.

Interestingly and annoyingly, the moment you attempt to sign in your user ID to log in to Facebook, the auto correct feature will instantly change it to something else. And yes, the first word of the user ID is also always capital! A bit of chaffing is needed here.

A few apps do come preloaded on the Vodafone Blue -Facebook Chat, Palringo, File Manager, Weather, converter and access to Vodafone Live services.

Performance
We really cannot expect much from the 200MHz processor but then again, it really doesn’t need more (unnecessary, if you may) power considering what it is supposed to do and what it is aimed at.

The 2.4-inch QVGA display has a resolution of 320x240 pixels. It is a pretty okay display for reading text on, and the high-ish brightness levels means that viewing in sunlight won’t be a real problem. However, browsing web pages or viewing videos will be an eye straining experience.

The QWERTY keypad is very comfortable to use. The keys are essentially divided by the rows, and just make it a little difficult for the fingers to remember the key positioning. Typing quickly wasn’t a problem, provided you were looking at the keypad. Dedicated camera key is a unique feature, only because it is within the keypad layout.

Speaking of which, the 2MP camera is one that falls in the category of being there because it was asked to be. Not to expect too much from it, except a quick snap of something interesting to post to Facebook.

Vodafone Blue does cut down on features like Wi-Fi connectivity and 3G. While it is okay most of the time, with the slow speeds on EDGE, YouTube is almost certainly out of the question.

Despite being coupled with a pretty small battery, just 1000 mAh worth of juice, it manages to hold up quit well - about a day and a half to two days, from full charge to complete shutdown. This is with a fair number of voice calls and FB syncing in the background via EDGE.

Our Take
The Vodafone Blue isn't a device for everyone. It certainly isn't for someone who wants a smartphone and/or isn't a big Facebook user. Essentially, this phone is targeted at the youth, who want instant social networking connectivity, but wouldn’t want the phone to be very expensive. It has decent build quality and sleek looks as well.

As for the 3G connectivity, all three devices have HSDPA, with a maximum bandwidth of 7.2Mbps. The Samsung Primo – the most regular looking of the three – features the best camera, with a 5MP autofocus offering with LED flash.

The Nokia X7 entertainment phone has been priced at Rs. 22,829 (MRP). Bearing a 4-inch Nokia ClearBlack Display, the capacitive touchscreen phone has an 8MP camera with dual-LED flash as well. The X7-00 is certainly a good looking device, with a slim, sharply angled body that is built out of stainless steel body. It sports the same CPU-GPU as the N8, with a 680MHz ARM11 processor and Broadcom BCM2727 graphics. Also featuring USB-on-the-Go support, the device has 3G/Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connectivity as well. As the name suggests, C5-00 5MP has a 5 mega pixel camera with an enhanced depth of field (EdoF) sensor, and is similar in spec with C5. However, the enhancement is not restricted to just camera only. The internal storage has been increased from 50MB to 270MB, while RAM has been increased to 256MB. The handset runs on Symbian S60 OS and has all other high end features.

The C5 5MP has Bluetooth and FM Radio and preloaded apps like Ovi store, Facebook and YouTube. In addition, the screen size is 2.2 inches with a display resolution of 240x320 pixels (QVGA). The 3G device is expected to arrive in later this summer. No word on pricing as yet.

HTC has launched its 3D smartphone – HTC Evo 3D – in India today, and it will be available across HTC stores in the country at a market operating price of Rs. 35,990. A glasses-free 3D orautostereoscopic offering like the LG Optimus 3D, HTC has evidently taken a hint from LG’s pricing in India, undercutting the earlier entrant by a little over a grand.

Report: Blackberry Messenger due for Android, iOS

Research in Motion is planning on porting its Blackberry Messenger Service to both the Android OS and eventually the Apple iOS platform as well, a report claimed Thursday.

Citing multiple sources within RIM, Boy Genius Report claimed that the software which may end up launching on the other platforms will be a de-featured version that could lack the ability to share multimedia files, BGR said.

HTC HD7 - Sleek and stylish, but far from perfect

The HD7 is quite a nice phone. The new platform seems promising, and is a huge step forward from WM 6.5, apart from a few shocking omissions. The HD7 loses out on account of these omissions, as well as a few of its own. A decent display in lieu of an S-LCD, a mediocre battery, mediocre speaker to mention a few. Its not a well rounded package and has a number of small, yet visible chinks in its repertoire. At Rs. 29,990 we cannot ignore that fact.

HTC is a brand that needs no introduction. The Taiwanese giant, known for building handsets for the likes of O2, iMate and so on, has entered the retail market and met with reasonable success. Touchscreen phones are the latest fad, and HTC has been steadily churning out a stream of such phones. They've made their mark in our market too, with some excellent capacitive-touch phones, and some of their phones like the Touch HD2 and Desire. Those interested can read our HTC Desire review here.

The HD7 is a direct descendent from the HD2, the latter was powered by Windows Mobile 6.5while the former features Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 - the newest cellphone platform available today. However, as we've learnt when it comes to operating systems and cellphones, the latest isn't always the best. Android is far from the perfect cellphone platform, and while it has gotten better, there are still a lot of small nits to be ironed out. And so it goes with today's candidate. The HD7 is an impressive looking phone, with an impressive spec-sheet. However, in the end its usability as a phone and the minor teething issues of the platform prove to be its undoing. As we've said before, there is no perfect touchscreen cellphone, along with adding faster CPUs, applications, nifty gesture-based controls and multimedia, manufacturers have forgotten to master the basics.

Look and feel

The HD7 is a beautiful looking phone - black and dark grey, exceedingly slim side bezels, and a handset that's dominated by a massive 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen. And this is probably the selling point or failing of this phone. The display will either attract you, or repel you on account of its size. Obviously, we'd have loved the ultra sharp Super LCD technology on the HTC Desire to make a second appearance here, but that wasn't to be. The gently curving rear and the flat front adds another dimension to the aesthetics. The HTC moniker on the top bezel is minimal - a relief from the space-consuming, garish and, at times cheap branding followed by the likes of the LG and Samsung. HTC is an OEM manufacturer, and it shows in the minimalist badging. The HTC is a conglomerate of metal, plastic and of course glass. There is a metal bezel running right around the phone, and the raised edges means placing the phone face down on a flat surface will not scratch the display.

There are three touch-sensitive keys beneath the glass slab that extends below the LCD. These keys are really well spaced out and while their backlighting isn't excellent, it's more than adequate to use. The screen on/lock key is located on the top of the phone to the right side, and quite frankly, while it is intuitive thanks to a slight indication for ones fingerpads, it is hard to press, and offers minimal feedback. The volume rocker located on the right is similar, offering only marginally better feedback. The camera key is even worse, offering no feedback to half click (for autofocus). The microUSB port and 3.5mm jack are conveniently located on the bottom of the phone.

Interface

We found the layout quite simplistic. While not as intuitive as the iOS layout on the iPhone, Windows has done a fine job keeping things simple. There are far less settings, and anyone who has scratched his head wondering what the difference between Bluetooth on and Beam on is, in WM 6.5, will find the settings on Windows Phone 7 basic. In fact, too basic for some, as a few advanced options are missing. However, most of the settings involve changing values from a list, or a switch-like, on-screen slider.

The touchscreen is very sensitive, and owing to this, navigating around is a snap. WP 7 has a nice flowing menu system, consisting of large tiles. This is the default homescreen. The second screen, that is just a side scroll away, contains all possible options like alarms, calendar, games, browser, messaging, MS Office among others, in a single vertical-scroll list. A simple press and hold on any of these options, gives an option to add it to the home screen - pretty simple. Since all WP7 phones will run the same interface, the HD7 will look no different from other WP7 handsets, other than a few extra options. The Start menu that Microsoft doggedly persisted on is dead, and we don't miss it a bit. Within an option, you can swipe sideways and you will get different sub options, like a tabbed list, like within mail, side scrolling will get you mails under different and intuitive heads, like all, unread, flagged, urgent and so on. There is a context sensitive list of options, represented by icons, on a bar at the bottom of the screen. Expanding this bar by pressing the "..." symbol shows lists the functions of each of the icons, while displaying a few extra context-

The Byond Q99 is a dual SIM, dual-memory QWERTY smartphone, which borrows the classic design aesthetics of a Blackberry business phone. RIA Trends: Web Apps and Stores

No one needs to be taught how to purchase items in a store, such a concept needs little introduction as it is something we have all done countless times. We have regular stores for purchasing regular goods, and for quite a while we have been seeing an increasing number of online stores where one can purchase a variety of items from household appliances to real estate. Yet purchasing digital "goods" online - applications, games, music etc. from an online store - on a mobile device or even a computer seems like a recent trend.

Surely software of all things is the most appropriate item for any kind of online store. It seems rather odd that one would still need to order a software DVD online when the internet is the best medium to distribute it. Purchasing an application online that gets delivered to your doorstep is akin to going online to send a snail mail.

Google may have started it off by announcing their Google Chrome Store, but the fact is, an online store for online applications just makes too much sense.

However, the internet's biggest charm is that it is a decentralized resource, where content isn't tied to any platform. One of the biggest things to look forward to with web applications is that they would make such applications platform-agnostic. It doesn't matter if you are running a low-power tablet, a mid-range laptop or a high-end workstation computer, everyone is welcome as long as you have a standards compliant browser.

The Google Chrome Web store however is intensely tied to the Google Chrome browser, even though it is as easy to use any of the web applications on any other browser. Google Chrome itself is standards compliant, however there is an artificial restriction in their web store that makes us prevent using their store on another browser.

Mozilla's concept of a decentralized web application store ecosystem on the other hand tries to afford us the same liberties we are used to with traditional stores. You can buy the same products from multiple different stores, and stores compete on the basis of user experience, customer service and satisfaction. In such an ecosystem, Google's Chrome Web Store would be just another web store of many, that would be browser agnostic.

The fact is that even this may not be enough freedom when it comes to web applications.

Most of the web applications that you use today are tied to services, and in some cases cannot be separated from them. For example, GMail is a great web application that is tied to Google's email solution. Now you may use the GMail service with any client you want, but using the GMail web app with other email providers is not directly possible. The same goes for Yahoo! mail, and the plethora of web mail solutions out there.

Similarly, Picasa and Flickr are two services that allow you to store images online, however they also offer services such as sharing, face recognition, tagging etc. However it is not possible to use a different storage provider (such as Amazon S3) with either service if you just want the add-on features.

In the desktop world this would be like each application storing files in its own storage, your one office application cannot access anothers' files, and the only way to open an image managed by Picasa in Photoshop would be to copy it to the clipboard from one and paste it in the other. Not a very pleasant image. If we are to move to the clouds then the internet will have to work better together.

This makes web applications fundamentally different from our desktop applications, and buying web applications is very different from buying desktop applications. Your photo collection, for example, isn't going to suddenly get deleted and disappear if you don't pay for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom every year, yet this could be the case if you don't pay for your online photo management application.

On the other hand, storing data online can give some semblance of security, your data is safe as long as you keep paying for your storage provider. Your desktop hard disk on the other hand could fail at anytime, and the manufacturer's warranty will only get you a hard drive back, not your data. So it is a compromise like any other.

We are also beginning to see web applications that offer merely an application, where the only service aspect is the continual maintenance of the system. The Pixlr image editor, for example, is an excellent RIA that offers image editing features that compare to those available in most desktop applications. Pixlr can simply be launched in your browser without registration or login. The application launches in your browser and lets you open files that from your computer, or from any URL you specify. Additionally, it can connect to some other storage providers if you are willing to create an account on their service. Such an application can be a drop-in replacement for your native desktop application.

We live in a time of absurd inconsistencies. On one hand we have capacities in terabytes in our computer, and are capable of working with high definition videos and images in tens of millions of pixels; on the other, we are relying on online services that aren't compatible with such gluttonous use of data. Transferring all your images and videos to an online storage service such as Flickr or Picasa seems ever more so a lockdown in the choices you have in the future.

The lockdowns are at many levels; at the browser level, where your app store is tied to your browser; or due to the service your opt for. Either way, while it may seem like you have a lot of choices to begin with, it seems like you have fewer choices and less wiggle-room once you settle in.

These are all problems that the current web app and web app store ecosystem needs to solve before we can truly start transitioning our computing to the cloud.

A logo for HTML5 unveiled by the W3C

HTML5 has already been conflated with possibly every web technology that is still in development, and is nowadays used as an umbrella term for HTML, JavaScript, CSS3 etc. It seems that this conflation confusion is now officially endorsed by the W3C themselves.

The W3C have unveiled a logo for HTML5, which they define as “a general-purpose visual identity for a broad set of open web technologies, including HTML5, CSS, SVG, WOFF, and others.” Makes sense to use a buzzword to popularize open technologies.

In addition to a logo for HTML5 itself, specific classes of features and technologies are also given logos of their own. The logos are clean, but not always clear, visual representations of the technology they represent. Here are the classes, the technologies they cover and their corresponding logos:

Huawei Ideos U8150 - Android 2.2 and 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen for Rs. 8,499

While the phone does not steal the title of cheapest Android phone away from the Micromax Andro A60 or the upcoming Intex device (pegged for Rs. 5,500), it does offer a capacitive touchscreen, 3.2MP camera, and Android 2.2 Froyo right out of the box.

While Fermi is still blazing hot, if not in temperature, then in bang-for-your-buck ability, Nvidia apparently has “hundreds of engineers” sweating it while building the company’s new generation of GPUs, codenamed Kepler. Based on the 28nm process, Kepler will apparently boast 3-4 times the performance per watt of the Fermi lineup, and will apparently also be incredibly power-efficient. Pictured on the roadmap as 2011, you can expect real GPUs to hit the streets only by 2012, if the Fermi’s 2009 development and mid-2010 launch are anything to go by. Next in line from Kepler is codename Maxwell, which will apparently deliver a 16x increase in parallel graphics computing performance compared to Fermi, and will be in development in 2013, and on shelves in 2014. Maxwell will apparently also deliver some very fancy technologies, including autonomous processing.

So, what exactly is so great about the LG Xnote A510 then? Well, it is LG’s first 3D laptop, and, it doesn’t require you to use active shutter glasses to view the 3D, instead you can use specially polarized 3D glasses that cost less, weigh less, and last longer. It's also apparently the first premium laptop to boast of delivering a "cinematic 3D experience." The laptop ships with the polarized glasses, as well as polarized clip-ons that will fit on your prescription glasses.

Though the Xnote A510’s 15.6-inch LED backlit screen supposedly offers 1920x1080 resolution, LG repeatedly mentioned the laptop only features “near full HD.” Quite puzzling! The mentioned resolution on a 15.6-inch screen is definitely startling though, and probably incorrect.

It possesses almost similar functionalities to the other popular Apple products like theiPod or iPod Touch. Opera Mini, possibly the best browser for Java based mobile phones has been announced by Opera for the iPhone. While the browser is still not available for public use, it is surprising that it is there for the iPhone OS at all.

Since a while Apple has allowed for developers to create browsers for the iPhone under the condition that they use WebKit as the browser engine. Does this mean that Opera has adapted the iPhone version of the browser to use WebKit instead of their own Presto? If Opera does use its own engine, it will be forbidden from appearing on the Apple store, and will only run on Jailbroken iPhones. This is also the reason that the Mozilla Firefox browser is not available on the iPhone yet, although it will be making its way to Android soon.

Natal design change: Console will share processing load
Microsoft has decided not to include a chip that processed information captured by Natal’s cameras. Instead, the device will now use software that will serve the same purpose and the load of processing that information will be borne by the consoles Xenon processor.

In the earlier design, Natal's motion capture system came bundled with a CPU that would process the user's movements before sending the information to the console. Now, the capture device will simply send raw information to the console and software on the system will process the information. Lenovo Skylight the first ARM based Netbook

Just as Freescale announced their reference design for an ARM based smartbook, Lenovo has announced the first ARM-based smartbook device. The compact 10" ARM based device is to be available spring of this year.

The device runs a customized Linux version which seems to be internet centric, and comes with many different social widgets for internet applications preinstalled. The device will work with AT&T's data plans and WiFi service to provide internet connectivity -- not that AT&T is any good for that -- on the go.

The device is highly geared towards portability, being under 2 pounds (under 900 gms) in weight and very slim clamshell design. Much like a smartphone, the device can kept on charging overnight and then used continuously throughout the day, with a battery backup time of 10hrs.

If this is true, then the GSM Nokia N920, featuring a 4.2-inch capacitive touch screen powered by a 600MHz ARM Cortex processor and 32 GB of storage will be the only Maemo phone to be released in 2010.

“Nokia plans to install Linux software on just one new smartphone next year, a source told Reuters on Monday, dampening prospects of a quick makeover of the Finnish group's struggling product line-up.”

For smart phones, the Symbian OS is considered regarded as a laggard, and even Nokia’s must hyped flagship release the N97 got poor reviews for its scant app support, stylus-based resistive touchscreen.

When it comes to comparing the Android, iPhone and Ovi app ecosystems, the iPhone is many years ahead of its compeititors. A few key killer apps released recently might reverse that sentiment. Nokia promises full integration of Qt technology in 2010, which helps developers port versions of the apps automatically to Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Maemo 6.
According to a recent news release from Nokia, “Since May 2009, Nokia has received over 400 contributions into Qt and Qt-related projects, which has helped ensure that Qt remains a stable, robust framework for developers to innovate on.”

Starting tonight, cellphones are going to DIE

Or less dramatically, if you have a Chinese mobile -- most of which do not have IMEI numbers -- there is need to worry, as the ICI (Indian Cellular Association) will be imposing a ban on the use of such cellphones starting midnight tonight.

IMEI numbers or International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers are unique numbers assigned to each handset. In case of loss or theft of cellphones, these can be used to track your mobile.

Often, stolen phones are sold with their IMEI number erased, or using an IMEI number from another cellphone. As such, ensuring that each cellphone which is operational is using a unique IMEI number has obvious benefits.

Additionally, terrorists can take advantage of blank or cloned IMEI to make their phones difficult to track. This is a good move for the security of the country, and will additionally aid in reduction of cellphone thefts too.

If you are not too sure about your phone (and even otherwise) you can test the authenticity of your IMEI number by sending a message to 53232 "IMEI " You can find out your IMEI number by pressing *#06# on your cellphone.

BlackBerry Curve 8520 for under Rs 16,000!

Well, this one caught us by surprise. Research In Motion usually has a price tag of Rs 20,000 or higher on all their new BlackBerry handsets launched in India. So when a press release from Bharti Airtel landed in our inbox and said the new Curve 8520 would be available for Rs 15,990, it was reason for a double take.

The phone sports a 2.64-inch TFT screen (65K colours, 320x240 pixels) that offers the latest version of the wonderful BlackBerry OS. The popular ‘pearl’ trackball, however, is missing and has been replaced by a standard trackpad. BlackBerry Curve 8520

The full Qwerty keypad stays intact and holds 256MB of memory underneath. Of course, this can be increased by a further 16GB provided you have a microSD card of that size.

In a perplexing move, the handset is adorned with dedicated music keys. We say perplexing because a standard 3.5-mm audio jack seems to be missing! So RIM wants you to play your music, but just not use your own headphones while you’re at it.

The 2-megapixel camera on the back is not going to impress anyone, nor is the standard connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP, microUSB port, GPS and A-GPS (with BlackBerry Maps). And no, there is no 3G on board.

For what can only be a phone targeted at the office-going professional, a reported talk-time of 4 hours and 30 minutes seems a bit less to us. Still, for that low price tag, we guess the company had to cut corners somewhere…

Silverlight invited to Apple's temple of sanctity

Soon we will have silverlight content on the iPhone! Well not really. However, apparently Microsoft has "worked with Apple" to bring one of the most important functions of browser plugins today to the Apple iPhone, web video.

Web video has rightly become the domain of the Flash player, and is one of it's claim to fame an ubiquity. Now Microsoft's Silverlight is treading on Flash Player's turn by providing playback of video content in Silverlight on the iPhone.

It is by no means the full Silverlight browser plugin, however Microsoft has used a combination of server side features and client side support for video playback in the iPhone safari browser to enable video content delivered using Silverlight to also work on iPhones.

Open-source Google Chrome OS will be available only on closed line-up of devices

All right, so TechCrunch was off about Google launching the much-hyped Chrome OS this week; but what Google has done is make the source code for it available for download to anyone interested. So basically, the people at Google and external coders can now work on the underlying operating system at the same time, said Sundar Pichai, Vice President of Product Management.

In a demonstration of the new Chrome OS at the Google headquarters at Mountain View, California, Pichai mentioned a few things that are worth noting. First, that the operating system is, as expected, a glorified version of the Chrome browser itself. The look and feel are pretty much the same, with just more eye-candy and features in the Chrome OS.

Also, the Chrome OS will work only on Solid State Drives, said Matthew Papakipos, Engineering Director for Google Chrome OS. That’s right, no hard disks with moving parts will be supported. So if you planned on running this on your computer with a dual-boot system, think again! More importantly, Pichai said that the amount of hardware supported will be selective and Google will support only ‘referenced hardware’. The company will be tying up with hardware manufacturers to offer the new Chrome OS on selected devices – netbooks, tablets, laptops or anything else. An open-source operating system on a closed line-up of devices? Irony, thy name is Google!

One extremely impressive factor of the demonstration was the boot-up time. From a cold boot on what looked like an Asus EEE netbook PC, Chrome OS was at the login screen in seven seconds. Google said it will take only another three seconds to be on the Web and browsing. Quite cool, that…

It seems like Windows XP is actually being looked at as an operating system for cell phones now. We have previously featured ITG’s xpPhone, which claims to run Microsoft’s operating system with a custom UI. Now, ViewSonic might be opting for the same to make its entry into the mobile phone market.

ClonedInChina is reporting that the renowned LCD monitor manufacturer is coming out with a new handset that runs on Windows XP. Called the VCP08, the device will be powered by an Intel ULV processor, have 8GB of memory, 512MB RAM, 4.3-inch touchscreen, full QWERTY keyboard and a 2-megapixel camera. The flip phone will have a smaller 2-inch display on the top, complete with a numeric keypad for normal phone operations.

ClonedInChina is quoting the price of the phone at $800 (Rs. 37,000 approx).

Well, well, well, what have we here! The gesturing man with the funny expression in the above picture is Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, talking to Shufflegazine, an Apple fans magazine. And right in front of him is a wonderful little tablet device that could perhaps be the first look we have at the upcoming Apple tablet.

Huang talked about Apple a lot with the magazine, saying: “Apple uses the best technology for their [computers]. Apple says to their customers: if you buy a computer from us, you can be sure we have selected the best technology inside for you. That is their promise to consumers. Their promise to consumers isn’t ‘we’ve selected the best technology for you with the exception of what Intel allows us to use’. That’s not their promise. And that’s why Apple uses the best technology where they want whenever they want. And that’s why I’m all Apple! At home, it’s just Macs everywhere. iPod Touch 32GB

Apple’s intent behind the iPod Touch was simple – take the much praised (and admittedly brilliant) interface on the iPhone and design a PMP around it. Thus was born the iPod Touch. It’s built exceedingly well and feels very solid in-hand. The screen is a glorious 3.5-inches and everything from the menu and usability, to its interface and the screen clarity, is top class. We noticed the first generation of iPod Touch had a screen with a noticeable blue tinge, the newer models have a noticeable yellow tinge that is not as bad, but the colours are not neutral and there’s nothing you can do about it. Being based on flash memory, transfers are slower than the Classic – a shame.

The latest firmware (3.1.1) slows things down a bit and the once snappy Touch’s menus have gotten slower after this upgrade. The new firmware also brings a lot of nifty little additions to the device and we’re happy to report most of the additions, while minor go a long way in enhancing the experience of using the Touch. The screen is excellent for movies although the trauma associated with using iTunes leaves lasting mental scars. Colour and crispness is very good and this is highly suitable as a video PMP

Acer launches three new touchscreen phones in India, starting at Rs. 11,900

Mobile phones with touch-sensitive screens seem to be getting cheaper by the day. Nokia, Samsung and LG have already joined the bandwagon, and it seems that it’s Acer’s turn now, with the launch of three new phones – two in this lower segment and one premium model.

The company has tied up with Tata Docomo to offer initial buyers free download data of 500MB per month for the first six months.

beTouch e101
The lowest end of the new series is the beTouch e101, which comes with a 3.2-inch resistive touchscreen TFT (65K colours, 240x320 pixels), complete with a scroll wheel under it for easier navigation. Running on Windows Mobile 6.5, the device comes equipped with a 2-megapixel camera (albeit without flash or autofocus), 256MB RAM, 512MB ROM (expandable via microSD), and the complete Pocket Office suite. Since it doesn’t have 3G or Wi-Fi, EDGE and Bluetooth will have to suffice for connectivity. The 1140mAh battery claims to last for 5 hours of talk-time and 400 hours of standby time.

Windows 7 still needs anti-virus, susceptible to 8 out of 10 viruses

During the launch of the new Windows 7, Microsoft had a lot to say about the safety features it offered, and especially protection from viruses and malware. While it was always meant to be taken with a pinch of salt, the guys at security firm Sophos decided to put the operating system to the test.

Chester Wisniewski of Sophos writes that they loaded up a machine with a fresh version of Windows 7, and left all the User Account Control options at default. Then, they grabbed the next 10 unique virus samples that arrived in the SophosLabs feed to see how well the newer, more secure version of Windows and UAC held up.

“Unfortunately, despite Microsoft's claims, Windows 7 disappointed just like earlier versions of Windows. The good news is that, of the freshest 10 samples that arrived, 2 would not operate correctly under Windows 7,” Wisniewski writes.

Lesson learned? You still need to run anti-virus on Windows 7. A viable option could be the new, free Microsoft Security Essentials suite that the company has launched recently. Ars Technica reported a few days ago on an antivirus comparison by AV-Comparative that puts Microsoft Security Essentials as the best free anti-virus solution out there, ahead of names like AVG, Avast and Avira.

Windows 7 debut is a hit
Meanwhile, market analysis firm NPD has released a report that says Windows 7 has done extremely well since its launch on October 22. According to NPD’s weekly tracking service, Windows 7 software unit sales in the U.S. were 234 per cent higher than Vista’s first few days of sales.

“Microsoft’s program of early low-cost pre-sales, high visibility marketing, and aggressive deals helped make the Windows 7 software launch successful,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. “In a slow environment for packaged software Windows 7 brought a large number of customers into the software aisles.”

Windows 7 Review

Over time, any Windows user is sure to find their documents, music and videos scattered all over their computer. Earlier versions of Windows provided users with the facility to relocate their personal folders, but were restricted to just one folder for documents on one partition. Often, people do not want to clutter their Windows partition, and chose to store their documents elsewhere, usually without pointing their document folder locations. Furthermore you were stuck with the categories of Music, Pictures, Videos,and Documents that Microsoft decided you needed. Some might like a dedicated folder for their Music Videos rather than clubbing them with their Music, or Videos folder, for example.

In Windows 7 this entire concept has been revamped with a new system called Libraries which allows you to create aggregations of similar content which may be located in different partitions or even different computers!

Imagine a scenario where you have a collection of eBooks in a folder on your D: drive, your personal documents in your "Documents" folder, and downloaded documents in a folder like "C:DownloadsDocuments". Here a single Documents Library could be created (one is available by default in Windows 7) which could then include these locations. You could even include any documents you have in folders at external locations such as a network share, a pendrive or an external hard disk.

First Google Android netbook ships with Firefox, not Chrome!

A few days before the launch of Windows 7, Acer has released the first netbook to ship with the Google Android operating system. And a juicy tidbit has come out of an early review: Android comes with Mozilla Firefox for Web browsing, not Google’s own Chrome browser or the Android browser that comes on mobile phones.

Google has previously announced its intentions to get into the netbook game with Chrome OS, but with Android’s ready availability, it was always going to be first onto machines. Acer had said that it wanted to get Android onto its netbooks soon, and last week, the company launched the popular 10-inch AOD250 mini-laptop for this purpose. However, the AOD250 isn’t solely an Android device. Acer has included the option of dual-booting into Windows XP – a much-needed option, according to a review of the new system by PC Mag.

iPod Nano

The new Nano is very sleek and much lighter than the previous gen widescreen Nano. Of course there is a newer version than the one we tested that also features a video camera but we’ll be testing that next month in the magazine, since it reached us late for this test. But on to this Nano – it’s cute with a nice curved profile. It’s long but very slim – perfect for those who want something feature-rich and with a screen while working out or jogging, since it won’t weight down your pocket. Its screen is good, although the text font doesn’t look as crisp as the iPod Classic or the iPod Touch. The clickwheel is still going strong and although it’s not the best for menu navigation it works quite well and is pretty accurate.

Apple iPhone 3G

Apple’s design sense has always been splendid; the iPhone 3G doesn’t break conformity. The first time you look at it; you’ll think iPod Touch on a high-fat diet. It’s better looking than its predecessor (the iPhone 2G). The black model we received was beautifully finished; thankfully the rear resists normal smudging and scratches. It’s not a very thick device but feels large to hold; although with a 3.5-inch screen this isn’t exactly a design flaw. Build quality is excellent. Quality of buttons and switches on the device are top-class. Even the SIM tray fits flush; attention to detailing is very good.

The buttons on the sides, top and the headphone jack are chromed, and the black bezel and chrome trim add further visual appeal. Apple’s menu system is excellent with the single main menu button being perfectly functional. The Apple iPhone 3G is appeal lies in its blatantly simple and usable interface and the sheer joy and funkiness of a touch and finger swipe navigation system that works flawlessly. The proximity sensor and low-light sensor work flawlessly.

The Apple iPhone 3G menus work well, but the on-screen keypad is a little small and you will make a few incorrect key taps for a month or so, which won’t please SMS junkies. The phones number pad is huge though; and you’d be a clod to goof up dialling numbers. SMS’ sent and received to and from a single number show up as a single entry with the last message exchanged as a preview; the rest of the messages are displayed in small green conversation boxes that become visible on selecting the relevant entry; a novel concept that takes getting used to. There is still no way to delete or select multiple messages. For some, the text entry box may also appear too small for practical use. If you try to edit a message after typing it out; the inbuilt magnifier helps as it magnifies the spot where your finger touches, but cursor navigation within the text body remains a tricky affair. You also cannot save a typed out SMS as a draft, and the inbuilt email option allows you to save multiple email IDs and password information for quick use; though the on-screen keyboard raises its ugly head again to spoil the party.

Nokia's new 8MP N86

Thought the 5MP on the Nokia N97 is enough? Nokia now bests it best with its new 8MP N86.

The Nokia N86 has a large 2.6” OLED screen and in contrast to Nokia N97's total lack of buttons this one has the plenty with the usual 5 button navigation, call / end keys, and menu and clear keys. A dual slide out design unveils even more keys, with the standard numeric keypad, and shorter slide-out with media keys.

With Samsung and LG coming out with phones having 12MP cameras, the 8MP camera may seem like an underplay. However for most people not looking for mobile that doubles as a decent camera, rather that a decent camera that doubles as a phones, this will indeed be impressive. The 8MP camera has Nokia's usual Carl-Zeiss lenses. Additionally it supports auto-focus with dual stage image capture, and a dual Led flash. The camera also supports video capture at VGA resolutions at up to 30fps.

Like the N97 it too comes with a GPS, digital compass, ambient light sensor, and proximity sensor. With almost the same feature set, it is quite a match for the N97, except for it's smaller screen, and lack of touch sensitivity.

With the recent release of the N97, this might just steal some competition away from the bigger beast, especially those attracted by its camera. Either way though the ball's in Nokia's court.

BenQ-Siemens Q-fi EF71

Sporting a stylish brushed aluminium exterior, the BenQ-Siemens Q-fi EF71 looks elegant and has a pleasant feel. The hinge of this ruggedly-built phone allows little play and feels very strong. When opened, it’s all jet black; only the 4-way rocker and the border of the keypad sport a metallic finish.

The blue backlit keys are well-spaced and extremely comfortable when SMSing. The icon-based UI is easy to use and the colour LCD is good, as is the external white OLED display used for various status messages.

The Q-fi range is music-focused, and this is one of the first phones in this series. Media playback keys are present on the lid, and there is also a music button at the side to start the media player. The 10-band equaliser makes listening to music a pleasurable experience. The 2.0 MP camera does not feature auto-focus, but still does a good job. You can’t zoom while taking still photos at the highest supported resolution.

The phone has a paltry internal memory of just 24 MB, so adding a microSD card becomes compulsory. The memory is not hot-swappable—you need to open the phone and remove the battery to access the slot. PC connection has three modes: mass storage device, Modem / PC Sync, or Webcam.

Nokia N96

Nokia’s N95 8 GB was, perhaps, one of the most balanced Symbian-based smartphones we’ve ever had the pleasure of reviewing. Most people look at such high-end phones as a sum of their feature set. For us, a cellphone is a more personal device, and the operation, ergonomics, intuitiveness of menus and ease of use are equally important as the features — especially when one is shelling out over Rs 30,000.

The N82 was thought to be a replacement for the N95, but without the slick two way slider, and a smaller screen, it was never an N95 killer. Now Nokia faced a dilemma — how to improve upon near perfection? Simple — improve the few noticeable flaws. And thus was born the N96.

Livered in a slick satin black facia with metallic silver all round the sides. The rear is satin black, with fine grey lines between — very similar to the finishes on the Nokia N82 and N78. Some may like such finishes — we personally don’t, and the N95 8 GB looked much more a serious phone than a rich boy’s play-toy.

The screen remains the same (2.8 inches) although it’s now become glossy, which gives the appearance of better contrast, but in reality this isn’t so. The speaker grilles are now much better looking. The revamping of the menu buttons isn’t successful however, and the four-way joypad is now much harder to use.

The menu button isn’t bevelled any more and its flush fit and closeness to the call accept button may lead to a few false key presses — very annoying. The volume and camera buttons on the side are now a lot harder to use, and feel tackier than the N95s keys. The number pad now has flat keys and their close spacing means using them is a pain — the N95 8 GB had bevelled keys — Nokia should have stuck with that.....

LG Touch?
Every company has a touch screen operated phone and the KU990 is a 3-inch, 3G touch screen phone from LG. The metal plate and the glossy front with chrome borders give the phone a stylish-yet-sturdy look.

You will soon realise that the main menu interface looks and feels a lot like the HTC / iPod Touch and iPhone. You can use either a finger or stylus to slide through menus. There’s no place to store the stylus on the phone though.

There aren’t too many buttons on the phone, primarily because of its touch screen functionality. There is a jog dial on the back of the phone around the camera lens which can be used to scroll through items or change sound volumes. However, this is inconvenient to use, and scrolling through menus using it is especially difficult. Scrolling using the touch-screen is a little cumbersome as well—those with shaky hands might accidently launch an application off and on. There’s a full keyboard on the touch-screen, and it works well with either your fingers or the stylus—our only complaint is the awkwardly-placed spacebar.

There is a 5 MP camera with a flash, and a standard VGA camera for video calls. The 100 MB internal memory is paltry, but can be supported by the Micro SD card slot. The earpiece is perfect, but the microphone quality is strictly average—expect some minor crackling. The speakerphone is fine, but gives out a high shrieking sound at times. The earphones that are bundled with the phone... err... just get the job done. LG KU990

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2

It’s been a long time coming with numerous leaks and sneak peeks, but now, Sony Ericsson has officially launched the new XPERIA X2, and the big news is that it will be running on Windows Mobile Phone 6.5. And Engadget has got some hands-on time with it, with a full video of the same.

Like its predecessor, this one is packed with so much stuff that the company probably didn’t have space to write ‘kitchen sink included’. The one big disappointment from the last model persists, though, as the X2’s 3.2-inch TFT touchscreen (65K colours, 800x480 pixels) is still resistive (probably to make a stylus work with WinMob 6.5) and does not come with an accelerometer. Switching from portrait to landscape mode is still activated by sliding out the keyboard. Really, Sony, what are you thinking with this one?

The Panel UI has gotten a makeover, and now you can go for a new bubbled layout apart from the 3x3 grid, as well as get the option of setting panels according to the time of the day. Aaron Duke, a product manager on the X2, has come out with a video explaining the changes:

Another significant change is that Sony has dropped the plastic menu buttons and gone with an optical trackpad for the same, giving the phone a sleeker, sexier look. Nice one, that!
